For a whopping 80% of the world’s population February is often defined as a month of crushed dreams. And it is not just down to Valentine’s Day disappointment.

For many this is the month where you realise that the New Year’s Resolution train you boarded back in January is well and truly off its tracks. The deflated excitement is real and the inevitable slide back into those old routines has firmly taken hold.

How we use New Year as an excuse to re-centre our worlds is bullsh*t, a timeline we fool ourselves with year in year out. So, to save you making those mistakes again, acquaint yourself with these…

4 Myth-Busting Facts About New Year’s Resolutions:

  1. On January 1, We can hit a reset button and simply become a whole new person.

Unlike Cinderella, your fortunes haven’t changed overnight and you’re still that very same person you were on 31st Dec. As the clock strikes 12, all your dreams do not come true. It takes a whole heap more to find that new you than saying a handful of resolutions.

  1. It is easy to make small changes.

New Year’s resolutions are often all about the small changes. I’m going to eat less chocolate, I’m going to watch less TV etc etc. Well sorry, no change is easy, especially when part of your New Year Resolution bucket. Behaviour change requires continuous effort until it becomes habit and part of your everyday routine.

  1.  Sheer Willpower will make those New Year Resolutions stick.

Well guess what!? It won’t. Whilst one’s willpower will set you on a path, willpower alone won’t yield success. New Year’s resolutions aren’t meticulously planned nor well thought through— for example nearly everyone of you reading this article will have neglected to think about the barriers of a resolution you’ve made. Your therefore always destined to fail.

  1. Resolutions really make a lot of sense.

Wrong. Making a resolution is nothing but paving the way for a better future. So, when you know the areas you need to improve then why wait for New Year? Research shows that people making promises during the New Year actually lack self-confidence or determination.

  1. Only by setting New Year’s resolutions can I become a better person.

So many people think the path to a better self is through resolution setting. In doing so they are overlooking the very real fact that only you can make yourself become a better person. And in acknowledging that you want to see change, you’re already halfway there.

So, ready to say #fckit and raise that middle finger up to New Year Resolutions? We thought so.
